Our team at RJ Daigle and Sons recently completed a levee improvement project in Edgard, Louisiana, transforming nearly four miles of the Mississippi River levee into a safe, accessible space for community recreation while also maintaining critical flood protection.
The project included construction of a 3.9-mile asphalt bike and pedestrian trail, utilizing approximately 5,300 tons of asphalt to create a durable, long-lasting surface. For added safety and visibility, 3.9 miles of thermoplastic centerline striping and all required pedestrian signage were installed along the trail.
To enhance community use, our team placed 10,600 cubic yards of embankment at various locations, creating designated gathering areas along the levee. We also constructed an additional asphalt levee access ramp in front of the St. John Parish Courthouse, improving access to the trail for residents and visitors.
Supporting infrastructure improvements included the installation of drainage pipe and catch basins to manage stormwater and protect the levee system. Along the trail, six concrete pad locations with pedestrian benches were added to improve comfort and usability.
Environmental protection remained a priority throughout construction, with 7.8 miles of silt fence, erosion control matting and hydroseeding installed to stabilize the site and protect surrounding areas.
This project reflects RJ Daigle and Sons’ commitment to building infrastructure that strengthens Louisiana and its vital levee systems while delivering lasting benefits to the communities we serve.
